There is little of the nation of Israel left in the land at the time of Jeremiah's ministry. The northern kingdom had been taken into exile more than a hundred years earlier. Now Judah and the city of Jerusalem are about to be judged by God through Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon, for having left God and the ways He had given them to live. But, even though exile is promised, so is a return.
lyrics
(Introduction) Hear 'O Israel: Nebuchadnezzar, the hand of God's wrath comes
(verse 1)
Jeremiah weep for the daughters of Zion;
God has cast down ... the apple of His eye;
Wail prophet wail, as the mountains shake around you;
through you God has shed ... a multitude of tears.
(verse 2)
Shall God indeed leave His chosen ones forever?
Beaten and bound, and off to Babylon;
Wail prophet wail, as the ground quakes around you;
through you God has stayed far from them and near.
(bridge)
Jeremiah weep for the dark day is dawning!
Jeremiah weep for the dark day is come!
End: They shall return to Me ... one day.
